Do you realize there will be times that we simply open our mouths and insert our foot? We excuse ourselves by "not thinking before we speak" - but did you know your speech is generated by your thoughts and what is in your heart?
In other words, for many years it has just been a lame excuse. The Word of God teaches us, "Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone." (Colossians 4:6) That means as God changes our hearts, He changes our speech. Our words are controlled by what's in our heart.
When we fail to take into consideration how the things we say affect other people, we are wrong. When we tear down others instead of building them up, we are not doing the work of Christ. Scripture in Ephesians 4:29 encourages us to carefully consider our words. "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up, according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
There is power in our words. What we say can make a huge difference in the lives of others. Let's watch our words and be positive. Let's intentionally speak to edify one another and encourage others in the body of Christ. Positive talk can change the outcome of your life and those around you. It's imperative that we listen more, talk less and strive to think before we speak.
