The Fence

What is a fence? Some people erect fences along their property lines. But what does the fence represent? It is a boundary, a separation point.

Among Christianity, often people decide to be fence straddlers, wavering between serving God or not.  They do not simply jump the fence of God's boundaries and run off - but they sit on God's fence of protection and provision with their feet dangling in the world.  And they try to serve two masters. They are double minded and their hearts are divided. But can we in fact, serve two masters? It is impossible to do.

The prophet Elijah approached the people in 1 Kings 18:21 and said this, "How long will you hesitate between two opinions?  If Yahweh is God then follow him and if Baal is god then follow him."  The people of this day were worshipping idols and everything other than the true and living God.  And we can be critical of their idols but I have noticed our priorities are also misplaced.  God calls you and I to a decision today.  He says, Choose. And He desires that we listen to His voice and that we follow Him with all our heart, not just a part of it. We are often indecisive, when God wants us to choose.

When we place other people, activities, and material things in the forefront of our passion for God, then we have actually made them our god.  We are sending a message to others that observe our lives everyday, that these things are more valuable to us than God.

Remember the commandment of the Lord, "You Shall Have No Other gods Before Me." And God wants you and I to be totally sold-out to His plan and purpose for our lives. He does not want us to be indecisive. It's time for us to stand up and make a decision.
